Statement by the delegation of Cambodia for UPR of Canada
at the16th Session of the UPRWG of the HRC

Mr. President,

  1. Cambodia warmly welcomes the delegation of Canada led by the Honourable Minister for presenting the National Report at this UPR process.

  2. Cambodia commends the progress and efforts made by the Government of Canada in implementing recommendations adopted at the first UPR Cycle, to promote and protect human rights in the country.

  3. We take note with appreciation of efforts made by the Government to take various measures that aim at promoting social inclusion and equality, combating racial discrimination and protecting women and children from violence, among others.

  4. Cambodia welcomes the Canada’s ratification to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with disabilities (CRPD) and notes with satisfaction that the Office for Disability Issues was designated as the focal point to further implement the Convention.

  5. We praise the efforts made by Canada who is committed to combating all forms of violence against women and girls, including the adoption and implementation of the Government of Canada’s 2012 Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking.

  6. While appreciating the above-mentioned progress, my delegation wishes to recommend that the country:

    • continues effectively implementing its Action Plan to combat human trafficking and further promote gender equality in the country with an increase in funding for the protection and promotion of women’s rights, (including for the prevention and remedy of violence against women).

    • ensures further the effective implementation of the recently established programs/policies on the protection of the principles and the rights of minorities including the indigenous groups that requires an equal approach and respect for each minority’s different characteristics.
